Abstract
Description
This lesson plan focuses on exploring the concept of fractals through the natural patterns found in pine cones. Students will begin by observing the physical structure of a pine cone and identifying any visible patterns. They will learn that the spirals they see are examples of fractals, a repeating pattern often found in nature. The lesson will introduce computational thinking principles as a tool to analyze these patterns. Through decomposition, students will break down the complex structure of the pine cone into simpler parts, and through pattern recognition, they will identify recurring elements, such as the Fibonacci sequence or spiral arrangements. By applying abstraction, students will distill the pine cone’s intricate design into more understandable components. Finally, using algorithm design, they will create a step-by-step method to replicate the fractal patterns they have identified, utilizing natural materials. This process will encourage critical thinking, creativity, and an appreciation of how complex natural structures can be understood through computational methods.
